Jo JohnsonUniversities and Science Minister Jo Johnson praised The University of Buckingham in a speech at the Higher Education Policy Institute’s annual conference.

He said: “This year marks 40 years since The University of Buckingham, Britain’s first ‘private’ university, was formally opened to 65 students. 98% of its students walk straight into a job. This is an example of what can be achieved by liberalising our higher education system.”

The theme of his talk was “From Teenage Years to Middle Age.” He said that the reason for this theme was: “Firstly, because everything we set out in our white paper is about ensuring students get the support they need throughout their journey – from the information available to them when they are applying, right the way through to their progression into the jobs market.”

He said that alternative providers should be able to set up so that students have the maximum choice when choosing degree courses.
