Summary of Programme
The first year of the programme is intended to provide a foundation in both knowledge and academic skills for the more specialist subjects in years two and three. Students’ progression onto the BA programme is subject to regulations for the Foundation Stage of three year degree programmes.
This degree combines a vocationally orientated programme in the skills and principles of 21st-century Digital Media and Journalism as currently under development, with understanding of the cultural, linguistic and literary contexts from which contemporary digital culture has emerged.
It aims to familiarise students with a broad range of essential and advanced media principles alongside building their writing and production techniques to prepare them for a wide range of contemporary Journalism and Digital Media practices, and for a wide range of careers with journalism and broadcast , from traditional journalism , to more contemporary content creation roles .
This degree combines a vocationally orientated programme in the skills and principles of 21st-century Digital Media and Journalism as currently under development, with understanding of the cultural, linguistic and literary contexts from which contemporary digital culture has emerged.

Educational Aims of the Programme
Year one:
1. To equip students to become independent learners, facilitating the successful continuation of their studies in years two and three.
2. To develop students’ ability to construct and communicate logical arguments clearly.
3. To help students acquire and practise strategies for effective reading and for academic vocabulary development.
4. To provide opportunities for students to develop academic skills.
5. To train students in language awareness.
6. To encourage students to develop general study skills, particularly including the ability to learn independently using a variety of source materials.
7. To stimulate engagement and participation in the learning process.
Years two & three:
• To provide students with the linguistic and media-related knowledge and understanding expected of those who wish to communicate and work in English in the local/global media industries of the 21st century.
• To develop students’ language and computing skills to function effectively in the local/global media environment.
• To provide opportunities for students to improve their own competence in using English as a means of communication in the local/global media environment

Knowledge and Understanding
Year 1:On successful completion of year 1 students should be able to:
1. Use English effectively for academic study.
2. Demonstrate the use of sources of information.
3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the structures, functions, processes and cultures pertaining to a range of social organisations.
4. Demonstrate a knowledge of the external environment within which organisations operate, including the political, social, economic and technological contexts at both national and international levels.
5. Demonstrate a knowledge and awareness of basic concepts in International Studies.
6. Gain awareness of and familiarity with university study environment.
7. Gain familiarity with fundamental facts, concepts, theories, principles and methodologies.
On successful completion of their studies, students will be able to
1. Critically discuss a range of aspects of media theory and practice relevant to the media communications fields.
2. Identify, discuss and evaluate relevant features of the linguistic study of the English language.

Teaching/Learning Strategy
Year 1:The programme will be delivered with a combination of lectures, seminars and small group tutorials, and with practical classes as appropriate. Teaching is supported by the use of module texts and journal articles. The use of IT is embedded across the curriculum Understanding is reinforced by support from tutors in the form of comments based on their assignment answers (ILO: 1-7).
Years 2 and 3:
1. Lectures on language and media topics.
2. Tutorials for discussion of topics.
3. Teaching seminars.
4. Weekly and termly coursework.

Assessment Strategy
Year 1:Examinations which typically comprise 50% of a module total are the main means of assessing knowledge. Coursework assignments are also used to address key topics within particular domains. Tutorial Contributions that typically comprise 10% of a module total.
Years 2 and 3:
1. Module essays.

3. Practical Assessments.
4. In-class tests.

Year 1:On successful completion of the programme, students should be able to:

Year 1:1. Students will be required to write and present assignments both as individuals and in groups.
2. Students will be given the opportunity to apply knowledge to solve practical problems.
3. Students will be exposed to a variety of workshops and practical exercises helping to develop numeracy and IT skills.
4. Students will be required to exercise research skills in preparation for classroom exercises.
