UBMS Public Health Crew

23 August 2019

8 Medical Students from The University of Buckingham under the supervision of Dr. Bharathy Kumaravel and in collaboration with The Milton Keynes Council formed the UBMS public health crew. The main aim of the group was to bring about a change or at least get practical experience in public health and its aspects.

One of the students said: “We had the opportunity to go into ethnic minority community lunch clubs and conduct focus groups on the perceptions about flu vaccinations as well as about the delivery of flu services of 2018/2019 year especially among the elderly.

This proved to be an invaluable experience for us as we were able to gather data among the population about flu vaccinations and depending on results we could probably see areas where improvements can be implemented. We found interacting with the people and gathering feedback quite enjoyable as it was interesting to know their viewpoints.

This project taught us many lessons such as teamwork, effective leadership and delegation, communication skills, data analysis and many more. As we go into our first jobs as junior doctors, evidence-based medicine becomes of increasing importance in our every day practice and I hope that all of us will be able to take up similar projects that will have impact the healthcare services and more importantly the society at large.”
