Masterclass Law Lecture: Law & Justice in the World of Sport – The Hon Michael Beloff KC

25 April 2024

The Vice Chancellor, Professor James Tooley and Dean of Law, Professor Adolfo Paolini welcomed The Hon. Michael Beloff KC to the Vinson Centre on Wednesday 24 April for his annual Masterclass Lecture: “Law & Justice in the World of Sport”.

Michael Beloff KC, widely acclaimed as the ‘Godfather of Sports Law’, has had a distinguished career as an advocate, arbitrator and judge, with involvement in some of the major sporting cases of the age.

The evening proved a huge success with excellent student engagement. The Law School would like to thank all involved for their thought provoking questions on current issues affecting the sporting world, delivered and answered with sensitivity and balance. A robust discussion centred on the specialist intersection of law and sport including doping, corruption and transgender participation.

“The Masterclass was truly insightful, offering a deep dive into issues related to Sport Law, varying views affecting athletic doping to enhance the chance to win at competitive events such as the Olympic, tournaments, as well as controversies surrounding the topic of transgenders in women’s sport.

Mr. Beloff’s expertise shone through, providing valuable insights to students that I’m sure we can all agree, will positively impact the student academic progress and professional careers moving forward. Additionally, the interactive nature of the session also allowed for engaging discussions and exchange of ideas among attendees.

Following the Masterclass, the book signing was a wonderful opportunity to further explore concepts discussed in the Masterclass and interact with Mr. Beloff on a more personal level. His enthusiasm for the subject matter was contagious, and I left feeling inspired and motivated.

Overall, it was a memorable experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have attended.

A big thanks to Julie, and The University of Buckingham once again for organizing such an enriching event.”
