Ethan Bunbury
Coming from the sun-soaked islands of The Bahamas to the quiet market town of Buckingham was nothing short of a culture shock. I began the LLB Law with Business Administration in October 2023, trading palm trees and warm breezes for case law, chilly mornings, and an accelerated academic schedule. Thanks to The University of Buckingham’s unique two-year degree structure, I completed the programme on 12 December 2025. While the course was undeniably fast-paced and intense, it was carefully designed in a way that kept it challenging without ever feeling overwhelming, setting the tone for a demanding yet deeply rewarding academic journey.
One of the standout features of studying at Buckingham was the small group teaching model. Lectures, workshops, and tutorials were highly interactive, creating an engaging learning environment and allowing for genuine one-to-one time with lecturers. This approach made complex legal concepts easier to grasp and encouraged open discussion, questions, and critical thinking. The accessibility of academic staff played a huge role in my development and confidence as a law student.
Work experience
As an aspiring barrister, I was especially grateful for the practical opportunities offered by the Law School. The University actively supported students interested in advocacy through both internal and external events and competitions. I was fortunate to take part in the School’s Mock Crown Court Trial, where I acted as a defence barrister. This experience was invaluable, teaching me core advocacy skills such as witness handling, structuring arguments, and delivering effective opening and closing speeches.
In addition, I competed in the Inter-University Moot Competition and the ESU–Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition. These experiences helped me develop strong mooting skills, courtroom etiquette, and sharpened my public speaking under pressure. I am extremely grateful to the University of Buckingham for providing and encouraging these opportunities, which have played a significant role in preparing me for professional legal training.
Student life
Alongside my academic work, I also served as an Academic Representative. In this role, I was consistently encouraged by how seriously professors took student feedback. Concerns and suggestions raised by the student body were genuinely considered, and changes were made where possible for the benefit of students. This demonstrated the University’s commitment to student experience and academic excellence. The teaching staff at Buckingham were highly skilled, knowledgeable, and passionate about their subjects. Their teaching style made learning feel seamless, and it was largely due to their support that I graduated with a First-Class degree and was awarded the Roderick Wu Prize for Best Performance in Criminal Law.
Student life at Buckingham was equally fulfilling. I enjoyed being involved in several societies, particularly the Basketball Society, which provided a great outlet to stay active and manage stress. And, the Afro-Caribbean Society, which offered a vibrant social community and memorable events.
Future plans
I am currently undertaking the Bar Training Course alongside a Master of Laws, and the legal education I received at Buckingham has provided an excellent foundation for this next stage. For anyone who does not mind hard work, meeting persons from all over the world, and a quaint, quiet town, I would highly recommend considering The University of Buckingham for your degree.
