Portrait photo of Caspar-JakobI came across Buckingham during my school year abroad in the UK. My decision as a German citizen to study abroad at The University of Buckingham was shaped by two defining factors. First, the accelerated two-year structure of the programme enabled me to obtain international awareness and a Bachelor of Laws within a shorter timeframe, while maintaining academic depth. Secondly, the opportunity to pursue a minor in Business Management alongside the LLB was particularly compelling, as it allowed me to complement legal study with a broader commercial perspective.

During my time at Buckingham, three aspects stood out. Foremost was the tutorial system, which is characterised by small-group teaching and close academic engagement. These sessions encouraged in-depth discussion, critical thinking, and confidence in legal reasoning. To me, the tutorials were the most important part of my learning and understanding as the lecturer knew you personally and could find your mistakes and weak arguing on the spot. This was at first intimidating, however over the past two years it proved to be the most valuable time in my academic learning, as I could use the feedback and learning from the tutorials throughout my assessments. The academic support from the University and Law School was excellent, thanks to the tutorials, the easy availability of academic help and the support provided by my personal tutor.

Secondly, Buckingham offered many external law related opportunities. I had the opportunity to participate in LWOW, an international project involving students from across the world. As a member of the EY-Law team, I worked alongside professionals operating at the intersection of business, law, and technology. Further, Buckingham offered a 6 month Law Clinic Programme at Citizens Advice Milton Keynes. This gave broader meaning to my legal studies, as you had to give advice to real people with real problems in real time.

Student life

Finally, one of my most memorable experiences at Buckingham was the Student Union and the diversity on campus. As everything is so small and close-knit, it was easy to meet and socialise with other students from all over the world, and I am delighted to count some of these wonderful people among my friends. The Student Union has organised numerous social events over the years and works closely with various clubs and societies.

Beyond my academic commitments, I was fortunate enough to play competitive hockey for two and a half years at the Buckingham Hockey Club. This experience allowed me to socialise not only with other university students, but also with locals and pupils from Stowe School. The club fostered a strong social community, including an unforgettable summer hockey tour to Southport.

Future plans

All of these experiences contributed significantly to a varied and enriching time at The University of Buckingham and enabled me to develop both personally and academically. My personal journey now continues with a six-month internship in Germany at a sustainable energy provider, where I am working in the project development of solar parks. Thereafter, I intend to pursue a Master’s degree from September in an economics- or business-related field, with a focus on sustainability.
