Photo of CaitlynChoosing to move countries to pursue higher education is never a small decision. In 2023, I took a leap of faith that reshaped my future. I moved from South Africa to the United Kingdom to study an LLB (Hons) Law degree at The University of Buckingham. After having completed my degree successfully and taking time to reflect on my university experience, I can confidently say that my time spent at Buckingham has been the most rewarding and transformative journeys for both my academic career and personal development.

One of the most distinctive and unique aspects about The University of Buckingham is the accelerated degree programme. Whilst there is no doubt that completing an LLB in two years rather than the traditional three is challenging, it is also extremely empowering. The programme gave me the opportunity to develop qualities that are essential for a successful future. Fostering discipline, focus and resilience. Additionally, it encouraged me to think critically while also strengthening my ability to manage my time effectively.

Furthermore, the academic support provided for by the university is exceptional. Attending lectures that are relatively small in size allowed me to learn in an environment that is engaging. The lecturers are approachable, passionate and invested in the success of all students. Creating a space where I felt truly known, not just as a name on the register but as an individual with future goals and potential. As an international student this added on support made a significant difference which in turn helped me grow in confidence.

However, university goes beyond just the academics. Moving abroad can be daunting. In the beginning of my journey I was filled with fear, intimated by the change that I was going through. Nevertheless, the fear and intimidation had been overridden on my first day on campus by the warm, welcoming and inclusive community provided by Buckingham. This tight-knit atmosphere made it easy for me to build friendships, seek and feel supported throughout. Buckingham quickly felt like home, a place where I have made some of my favourite memories and met friendships that will last a lifetime. Moreover, being surrounded by students from diverse backgrounds enriched my experience and broadened my perspective.

I leave Buckingham more confident, resilient and self-assured than when I arrived. To prospective students contemplating completing the accelerated degree, I leave you with this reassurance: it will be challenging but you will be supported every step of the way. The University of Buckingham will provide you with a strong academic foundation, the essential skills, confidence and mindset needed for a successful career. Choosing Buckingham was one of the best decisions that I have made, and I am proud to be a graduate of the institution.
