As part of The School of Computing’s mission to empower women in computing and technology, this hub showcases some of our most exciting achievements and initiatives. The School of Computing is proud to be recognised for creating exceptional opportunities to advance women in STEM.
These primarily focus on inspiring girls and young women to pursue their passions and realise their ambitions within technical industries.
Our new Levelling Up programme connects our own female undergraduates with aspiring school students, creating mentorship to support the next generation. We have also partnered with Open Bright, a UK-based charity that offers awards to support innovative research projects.

Looking back at my journey since 2019, I’m incredibly grateful for my time at The University of Buckingham, which was made possible with a merit scholarship for my PhD provided by the School of Computing.
I always wanted to pursue a PhD, a goal that was solidified during my master’s in computer science.
Rashmi Perera – PhD Computing at Buckingham: First year experience
I am Rashmi Perera, and I am currently studying as a PhD in Computing student at the School of Computing, The University of Buckingham.
I hold a BSc (Hons) in Information Technology from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and following two years of experience in the software engineering industry, as well as in academia, I turned my interest towards pursuing a PhD for the advancement of my career in research and in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Madara Premawardhana – PhD Computing at Buckingham: First year experience
My name is Madara Premawardhana, I am studying for a PhD in Computing at the School of Computing, The University of Buckingham and I am currently in the second year of my research studies.
My current research focuses on using Digital Twins towards Net Zero realisation. I work on using the concept of Digital Twins and employing Machine Learning and AI techniques along with simulations to investigate efficient solutions for sustainable energy production.
