Can I start university in January?

When can I apply to start university in January, are there any deadlines?

We accept applications for our January starts all year round via the direct application form on our website. Just head to the course you are interested in, and hit ‘Apply’. If you are a UK student applying for your first degree (an undergraduate course), you can also apply via UCAS.

You need to apply by the first week in December to have your application processed in time to start your course in the following January. Application deadlines can vary by course, and we may be able to accept late applications. There is more information on How to Apply.

Will starting in January put me at a disadvantage?

No, not at all. The course content will be the same as for our programmes starting in September, and if you apply for a two-year degree to start studying in January, you can graduate in December into a less crowded job market.

What courses offer to start studying in January?

Most of our programmes are offered in January (as well as September). We are one of the few universities in the UK that offer a genuine second intake for our courses every year. You can search to discover which courses accept January applications.

How do I apply?

Your application process will depend on the course you’re interested in. If you know which course you want to apply for you can search for it, and then click the ‘Apply’ button once you’re on the page. The apply page for each course contains information about entry requirements and what you need to start the application process.

To find out general information about applying for undergraduate (first degree) or postgraduate courses, visit our How to Apply page.

How do I apply to study Medicine?

Our 4.5 year GMC-accredited MB ChB Medicine programme only offers a January start. You need to apply first and if you meet our entry criteria you may then be invited to attend a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) session to potentially secure a place on our Medicine course.

How will I be selected?

Every Buckingham course has its own specific set of entry requirements. To be selected you need to meet the entry requirements outlined on the course page as part of the application assessment.

I am an international student. Do January application dates apply to me?

Yes, you still need to apply by the first week in December to be considered for a January course the following year. International students can apply directly or apply via an agent.

What will my timetable look like?

The timetable for our programmes is not finalised until applications have closed. However, once you are a student you will be able to access and manage your timetable online.

What if my preferred programme is not available to start studying in January?

Almost all of our courses offer a January start. However, if your preferred programme is not available then you can either choose to wait for a September start or consider an alternative programme which is as similar as possible to your first choice and does offer a January start. Our Admissions team can help to point you in the right direction.
