    About the course

For aspiring founders, innovators and intrapreneurs who strive to drive change in businesses of every size, Buckingham’s Business Management with Entrepreneurship degree is practical rather than theoretical. This course combines core business management alongside development of the skills, mindset and confidence to create, launch and grow new ideas.

Business needs people who can do more than understand organisations. It needs people who can spot opportunities, create value, challenge assumptions and turn ideas into action. The Business Management with Entrepreneurship degree is designed for students who want to develop that entrepreneurial edge; whether you aim to launch your own venture, grow a family business, work in a start-up or bring innovation into an established organisation.

In this degree, you will study the core areas that every business graduate needs, with a distinctive focus on enterprise, innovation, and practical entrepreneurship. You will study the foundations of business, including management, marketing, finance, economics, strategy, people, operations and decision-making. You’ll also explore what it takes to create and develop new products, services and organisations.

The course goes beyond textbook learning. You will have opportunities to engage with entrepreneurs, analyse real entrepreneurial journeys and benefit from links with local businesspeople and wider enterprise networks. You’ll also learn through excellent academic contact, entrepreneur-led sessions, business projects and micro-internships.

A key strength of the programme is its practical focus. Students learn about the psychology of entrepreneurship, innovation, social enterprise and business creation. They also complete a dissertation on an entrepreneurial topic that interests them, allowing them to investigate an area aligned with their ambitions. You will graduate with a recognised degree, practical experience and the confidence to take your next step in business.

    Course Highlights

    • A focus on practical, up-to-date business creation issues.
    • You will be assessed through business skills, not exams or essays.
    • You’ll be taught by lecturers who have real-world entrepreneurial experience
    • Experience valuable connections as you interact with real entrepreneurs.
    • You will work on live business projects with real local business founders.
    • The development of a powerful mix of business and enterprise skills.

Please note: This course is offered subject to final validation by the University’s Senate and Learning and Teaching Committee, with validation due to be completed by the end of June 2026.

    Course breakdown

Your degree will firstly explore how businesses work and how managers make decisions, alongside the development of your own personal, communication and academic skills. Your studies will progress into accounting, economics and marketing, before looking at how people, teams and organisations behave. You will also discover what it takes to be an entrepreneur as you investigate the psychology of entrepreneurship.

Equipped with this understanding, you will begin developing business ideas and discovering how to innovate. You will learn how to manage people and change as a business grows. Plus, having studied strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, you will also study how to disrupt and how to avoid a start-up becoming disrupted by technology and other businesses.

Towards the end of your degree, you will discover how businesses go about conducting research, allowing you to complete your own project before running a simulated business online in competition with your fellow students.

    Year 1

During your first year, you will focus on business fundamentals, such as marketing, finance, and decision-making, as well as developing the skills you need to be a successful entrepreneur, including understanding the psychology of entrepreneurship.

    Year 2

In year two, you move on to managing people, behavioural aspects of business, as well as service and strategy. You will also investigate your options for starting businesses, including social enterprises, and discover the problems of disruption.

    Teaching and assessment

We keep class sizes small so you won’t get lost in the crowd. You will be assigned a personal tutor to support you every step of the way, and our academic and student support teams will ensure you have the tools to success in your studies. We value the quality of your learning experience.

    Teaching methods

Your timetable will show “lectures,” but we don’t run traditional lectures in this business degree! Instead, when you see the word “lecture” it really means “workshop” or “seminar” or “practical session”; we want you to learn by doing. So, whilst you will receive some short theoretical or instructional talks, these are always enhanced by practical exercises that you complete in class. During many of your “lectures”, you’ll be asked to leave the lecture theatre to complete an exercise elsewhere, on campus or perhaps in Buckingham itself, before returning to discuss your findings.

Each week, you will also attend a tutorial session for each of your modules. A tutorial is a small-group session with around eight students, where you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your learnings or to complete specific tasks set by your lecturer. These sessions allow you to check your own understanding of a topic, and your lecturer can support you with any concepts you may be struggling with. Or, as is often the case, the lecturer will see your positive progression and therefore challenge you with additional material. Either way, tutorials are an excellent way to ensure you get to grips with the topic.

During your programme you will also experience guest lectures from people in business, such as owners of local businesses, small firms or major global brands. Each term, you will get to engage with several businesspeople who come to deliver these guest lectures. As a result, you’ll hear about what is occurring in businesses right now, and therefore get to grips the challenges that they encounter.

Another way in which you’ll engage with businesses is through the project work you will undertake. Businesses come to the University and provide students a real, live project that they need help with. You get more deeply involved in the business, and this gives you a real, tangible understanding. Recently, our students have produced a marketing plan for a wine shop, a business plan for a gym, and a strategy for a radio station.
