About the course
Your journey to a University of Buckingham degree starts here. The Online Foundation Certificate is a flexible programme that gives you the academic skills, subject knowledge, and confidence to succeed at university level. Everything is delivered online, so you can study from home, wherever you are in the world. If you want to study for a UK university degree, this programme is your first step.
The Online Foundation Certificate is a six-month programme designed to prepare you for undergraduate degree study at The University of Buckingham. It is delivered fully online, with a mix of live classes and self-paced study, so you can learn at times that work for you.
The programme is made up of four modules. In the first term, you will build the essential skills that every university student needs. You will learn how to think critically, write academic essays, carry out research, use digital tools effectively, and understand how to use information honestly and responsibly. These skills will help you in every subject you study at university.
In the second term, you will begin studying your chosen subject area through one of five specialist modules: Business and Economics, Law and Justice, Psychology, Computing, or Politics and Society. You will also complete a Foundation project; your own piece of independent research that brings together everything you have learned.
Throughout the programme, you will be supported by a personal tutor, small online classes, and a dedicated online learning platform. You will never feel alone in your studies; our academic team is here to help you every step of the way.
When you complete the programme successfully, you will be ready to begin your undergraduate degree at The University of Buckingham, fully prepared and confident to succeed from day one.

Teaching and assessment
We keep class sizes small so you won’t get lost in the crowd. You will be assigned a personal tutor to support you every step of the way, and our academic and student support teams will ensure you have the tools to success in your studies. We value the quality of your learning experience.
Teaching methods
The Online Foundation Certificate uses a carefully designed mix of live and self-paced online learning. This gives you the support of regular contact with tutors and fellow students, alongside the freedom to manage your own study time.
Each week includes a live plenary session where your tutor introduces key ideas and frameworks for the week. You will then join small online workshops where you practise and apply what you have learned through guided discussion, problem-solving activities, and group tasks. These live sessions are supported by self-paced activities on our online learning platform, including readings, short quizzes, practice exercises, and discussion forums.
Every week you can also attend a drop-in clinic, a live online session where you can ask questions, get feedback on your work, and receive extra support for independent study. Your personal tutor is available throughout the whole programme to guide you, check your progress, and help you prepare for assessments and for your progression to undergraduate study.
For the Foundation Project in Term 2, you will have regular online supervision meetings with your tutor who will support you as you develop your research question, find and use sources, and write up your findings.
Teaching on the programme uses a wide range of methods including structured discussions, peer feedback activities, data tasks, and independent research. All of this is designed to be clear, accessible, and engaging in an online environment while building the academic skills you will need at degree level.
Assessment Methods
Assessment on the Online Foundation Certificate is varied and designed to build the skills you will use throughout your degree. There are no traditional written examinations.
You will be assessed through:
- A writing task in which you will read and respond to a text, showing your ability to construct a clear written argument.
- A written analytical report (1,500 words), followed by a short oral discussion with your tutor, where you’ll explain and talk through your findings.
- Subject-specific written and oral assessments in your chosen Discovering module, designed to reflect the methods of your subject area.
- A Foundation Project including a written report and an oral presentation, showing your ability to carry out independent research at foundation level
All assessments are designed to be fair, manageable, and to genuinely reflect your own learning and development.
