We are saddened to learn of the death of Lord Jeffrey Archer, bestselling author, former politician, and husband of our Chancellor, Dame Mary Archer.
Lord Archer had a distinguished career spanning public service and literature. He served as Member of Parliament for Louth (Lincolnshire) between 1969 and 1974, and as a Member of the House of Lords between 1992 and 2004. He was also one of UK’s most widely read novelists.
On behalf of the University community, Interim Vice-Chancellor David Cole said:
“We were very sorry to hear of the death of Lord Archer. At this sad time, our thoughts are with Dame Mary, her sons and the wider Archer family as they come to terms with their loss. On behalf of colleagues across the University, I would like to extend our sincere condolences and support.”
Mark St John Qualter, Chair of Council said:
“On behalf of the Council and the whole University community, I want to express our deep sadness at the death of Lord Archer, and to offer our heartfelt condolences to our Chancellor, Dame Mary Archer, and to their family.
Jeffrey was a generous and ever-present supporter of Dame Mary in all she has done for Buckingham, and his warmth and energy will be remembered fondly by many here. Our thoughts are with Mary, James and William, and all who loved him, and we will give them every support in the days ahead.”
We know that many members of our University community will wish to join us in expressing sympathy to Dame Mary Archer and her family during this difficult period.
Our thoughts are with Dame Mary and her family at this time.
