    About the course

Set yourself up for success in SQE1 and beyond with our collaborative 12-month LLM Law with SQE1 Preparation programme. Complete BARBRI’s SQE1 preparation programme under the individual mentorship of experienced lecturers, supported by in-person workshops to purposefully track your progress, and build your professional competencies and career trajectory. In addition, hone your legal research, critical analysis, and communications skills through our dissertation module and a range of advanced law modules to tailor to your interests.

This programme gives you the time, tools, and regular support necessary to process, practise, and perfect your knowledge, skills, and competence, ensuring you feel confident sitting SQE1 and entering legal practice thereafter. Whilst completing the programme is not contingent upon sitting SQE1, September starters are expected to sit SQE1 in July. January starters are expected to sit SQE1 the following January.

BARBRI’s industry-leading SQE1 preparation programme has been incorporated into this 12-month LLM degree to ensure a holistic approach to professional development. This is not only focused on passing SQE1, but develops an understanding of professional expectations as well as legal knowledge and skills more broadly. Students are taught to engage in reflective practice to track their professional development and deliberately optimise their preparation for SQE1 and beyond. You will have regular in-person support in this journey, from an individual Learning Coach experienced in legal practice and legal education, as well as group workshops.

You can tailor this programme to your interests by picking elective modules, allowing you to graduate with a specialisation in one of the following:

    • Banking and Financial Services Law
    • Corporate Law
    • International Trade and Maritime Law
    • Regulation of Financial Crime
    • Public International Law

Students across all of our LLM programmes join together in seminars, engaging in academically rigorous evaluation of complex legal issues at the forefront of their chosen areas of law. On our dissertation module, you will dive deep into a particular aspect of your chosen specialisation. Training in advanced legal research enables a practical understanding of the creation and interpretation of knowledge.

Rigorous academic training, smart SQE1 preparation, and individual mentoring allows you to combine the best of academic and professional development courses. You will also graduate with an LLM that speaks to your advanced research and critical analysis abilities, your subject specialisation, and your readiness for SQE1 and legal practice.

    Course breakdown

Throughout the course, you will complete three parallel components of study: your dissertation, an SQE1 preparation module, as well as elective modules worth up to 60 credits.

You will have three terms to undertake BARBRI’s SQE1 preparation course, tracking your professional development with a reflective practice supported throughout by regular individual and group sessions.

The dissertation module starts with workshops that introduce you to advanced legal research. You then have three terms to write up your dissertation under the supervision of a member of staff. Your elective modules can be spread across our autumn, winter, and spring terms. Depending how you spread your electives, you will study a maximum of two electives in a term, and may have one or two terms dedicated solely to SQE1 preparation and your dissertation. Please note that students on a visa will need to spread their electives more evenly across three terms to comply with visa requirements.

Please see the Programme Specifications, as well as our list of Elective Modules for further module details.
