Buckingham’s Associate Project Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship combines academic learning with real workplace application, helping apprentices build confidence in the planning, coordinating, and supporting of successful projects across a wide range of sectors.

    The Associate Project Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship is designed for individuals working in project-related roles who want to develop the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours needed to support successful project delivery within modern organisations.

    Apprentices will develop vital expertise in project planning, stakeholder management, communication, budgeting, leadership, risk and change control, while building evidence towards Apprenticeship Assessment. The programme is delivered through a blended learning approach, combining various forms of teaching to ensure varied and engaging learning that allows for immediate application in the workplace.

    Aligned to the Skills England Associate Project Manager apprenticeship standard (ST0310 v1.5) and informed by the APM Body of Knowledge, the programme prepares apprentices to become reflective, ethical, and professionally grounded project practitioners capable of supporting organisational success across a wide range of sectors.

    Over 14 months, apprentices benefit from structured teaching, workplace-integrated learning, practical project activity, and continuous professional development. These are all designed to support effective, long-term career progression within the project management profession.

    The programme includes predominantly live, interactive online teaching sessions, supported by planned on-campus learning days at The University of Buckingham to enhance networking, practical learning, and academic support.

    Successful completion aims to support progression into a range of project management-related roles, alongside progression towards higher-level project management roles and professional membership pathways.

    This apprenticeship is aligned to the Skills England Associate Project Manager apprenticeship standard (ST0310 v1.5) and informed by the Association for Project Management (APM) Body of Knowledge.

    Successful completion of the programme supports progression towards Associate Membership of the Association for Project Management (APM), helping apprentices develop industry-recognised knowledge, skills and professional behaviours aligned to modern project management practice.

    The programme is delivered over 19 months. This includes a 14-month taught period, followed by up to five months for Apprenticeship Assessment. The structure is designed to provide consistent support, practical workplace application, and continuous professional development throughout the apprenticeship journey.

Apprentices develop skills in project planning, stakeholder management, communication, leadership, budgeting, risk and change control through activities designed to reflect modern project environments.

    The programme also incorporates group activities, workplace projects, reflective practice, and employer mentoring to support the development of professional behaviours and applied project management capability. Workplace-integrated learning is a key feature of the apprenticeship, enabling apprentices to contextualise learning within their organisation and contribute directly to operational and strategic project activity.

    Planned on-campus learning and networking days at The University of Buckingham provide opportunities for practical learning, collaboration, academic support, and professional networking with peers and staff. Apprentices also benefit from access to wider University support services, digital learning resources, academic guidance, and personal tutor support throughout the programme.

    Teaching is supported through continuous formative assessment activities including reflective accounts, witness testimonies, professional discussions, written assignments, and knowledge checks, helping apprentices monitor progress and prepare for Apprenticeship Assessment.

    Assessment Methods

    Assessment throughout the apprenticeship is designed to support the practical application of learning within real workplace project environments. There are no formal written exams within the programme. Instead, apprentices complete a range of coursework and workplace-based assessment activities designed to develop and demonstrate professional knowledge, skills and behaviours.

    Formative assessment methods throughout the programme include:

    • Reflective reports
    • Written assignments
    • Professional discussions
    • Witness statements
    • Workplace-based activities
    • Knowledge checks
    • Portfolio development.

    These activities help apprentices monitor progress and prepare for Apprenticeship Assessment.

    At the end of the taught period, apprentices complete an independent Apprenticeship Assessment, consisting of:

    • A written project report based on a real workplace project, followed by a presentation and question-and-answer session.
    • A professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence developed throughout the apprenticeship.

    Assessment is focused on practical workplace application, ensuring apprentices can demonstrate their ability to apply project management knowledge and skills within professional project environments. The final Apprenticeship Assessment is graded as Fail, Pass or Distinction.

    After your course

    Successful completion of the apprenticeship can support progression into a wide range of project management and operational roles across multiple sectors. Apprentices will have developed practical project delivery skills, professional behaviours, and workplace experience valued by employers within modern project environments.

    The programme also supports progression towards higher-level project management responsibilities, further professional qualifications, and higher-level apprenticeships.     Entry requirements

    Applicants must be employed in a project-related role that enables them to apply learning within the workplace and build a portfolio of evidence based on real project activity. Employer support is required throughout the apprenticeship, including support for workplace learning and off-the-job training time.

    Applicants should normally hold: GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).

    Successful applicants are likely to demonstrate strong communication, organisational and teamwork skills, alongside a willingness to learn and develop professionally within project environments.

    To be eligible for Apprenticeship funding, learners must evidence that they:

    • Are eligible to work in England
    • Have been ordinarily resident in the EEA, Gibraltar, or the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship – if this is not the case, please contact apprenticeships@buckingham.ac.uk before applying as there are some exceptions to this rule
    • Be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in England
    • Cannot be registered on another government funded course at the same time as enrolling on this apprenticeship.

    The University reserves the right to increase course fees annually in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI). If the University intends to increase your course fees it will notify you via email of this as soon as reasonably practicable.

    Course fees do not include additional costs such as books, equipment, writing up fees and other ancillary charges. Where applicable, these additional costs will be made clear.

    Apprenticeships are fully funded by the employer through the Apprenticeship Levy. The maximum cost for the Apprenticeship is £7,000; this may be less, dependent on your recognised previous learning which will be assessed at interview through a robust initial assessment. There is no cost to the employee undertaking an Apprenticeship.

    Your business will be paying the Apprenticeship Levy each month if it:

    • Has an annual pay bill of more than £3 million
    • Is connected to any companies or charities for Employment Allowance purposes and has a combined annual pay bill of more than £3 million.

    The Apprenticeship Levy is an amount paid at a rate of 0.5% of an employer’s annual wage bill and will be paid through Pay as you Earn (PAYE).
