Philip Obiorah selected to conduct workshop at DevFest Scotland 2025

20 November 2025

Philip Obiorah, Learning Development Coach in Computing, has had a workshop proposal officially accepted for DevFest Scotland 2025. Philip’s workshop is titled ‘Practical MLOps with Vertex AI: Deploying ML Models’.

The event is organised by Google Developer Groups (GDG) and will take place on Saturday 29 November 2025.

Google Developer Groups are community-driven technical organisations supported by Google. They bring together developers, students, researchers, and industry professionals to learn, share knowledge, and collaborate on modern technologies. GDG events, particularly DevFest, are well-regarded for their strong emphasis on hands-on engineering practice and real-world industry applications. Presenting at such an event provides valuable visibility and connects our University with a vibrant global community of practitioners and innovators.

DevFest Scotland 2025 is a collaborative event hosted by GDG Edinburgh, GDG Glasgow, GDSC Glasgow, and Women Techmakers Scotland, with support from Lloyds Banking Group. It will be held at the historic Bank of Scotland Headquarters on The Mound, Edinburgh (EH1 1YZ). This year’s theme is ‘Building Safe, Secure, and Scalable Solutions with AI and Cloud’. The programme features expert-led talks from Google speakers and local developers, and hands-on workshops in AI, Cloud, Machine Learning, Vertex AI, Web, Android, Firebase, and broader tech innovation. The event is designed for students, professionals, and anyone interested in responsible and scalable technology development.

Philip’s workshop will introduce attendees to an end-to-end MLOps workflow using Google Cloud Vertex AI, including dataset preparation, model training with PyTorch, evaluation techniques, and cloud deployment. It is aimed at data scientists, ML engineers, and cloud practitioners seeking to enhance their applied skills in production-grade machine learning systems.

This opportunity aligns strongly with the University’s strategic goals in computing, industry engagement, and strengthening our presence in AI and data science communities.
