Buckingham top for student satisfaction and staff-student ratio

25 April 2016

The Complete University GuideBuckingham has been awarded an impressive double first by coming top for student satisfaction and staff-student ratio ahead of all other universities – including Oxford and Cambridge – in The Complete University Guide rankings.

The University – one of the country’s smallest – has also come second overall in the rankings regionally for Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire. Oxford University was the only HE institution locally with a higher overall ranking.

Buckingham, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, was one of the highest climbers in the rankings with the third highest rise of 14 places up to 55th place.

Vice-Chancellor of The University of Buckingham, Sir Anthony Seldon, said: “It’s no coincidence that we are top for student satisfaction and for staff-student ratio. An increasing number of students are choosing us over large universities because instead of big, impersonal lectures our academics have an open door policy and students can get help whenever they need it.

“It isn’t surprising we are ahead of Oxford and Cambridge – our students are taught by lecturers, many of who are leading academics in their field. As one of Britain’s smaller universities, we can offer a friendly, caring environment which is very conducive to successful learning.”

Figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency – HESA – reveal that Buckingham is top for graduate employability with 98.1% of students having a job or studying six months after leaving university. Buckingham also leads the way in the National Student Survey (NSS) for Student Satisfaction and is in the top third of universities (30th place) according to the Whatuni Student Choice awards, which are voted for by students.

Buckingham is the only independent University in the UK to have a Royal Charter, has won acclaim throughout its pioneering history by doing things differently. It was the first to offer two year degrees, which impress employers because students do what others do in three years in just 24 months. Buckingham also opened the country’s first independent medical school last year, which has been phenomenally successful and offers a new model for training doctors without the taxpayer having to pay a penny.
