Our upcoming Law Taster Session is a great opportunity to visit our campus, meet our staff, chat to current students, and get a feel for what its like to be a Law student at Buckingham.
Each Taster includes a themed tutorial session, so you can experience what it is like to study Law at Buckingham.
This taster’s theme is Human Rights and Climate Sustainability.
During this taster, Dr Cynthia Umezulike will deliver a mini lecture that will explore climate sustainability strategies and identify how human rights can be centred to adapt and respond to the challenges posed by climate change.
The intersection between climate change and the negative impact on the full realisation and enjoyment of human rights is nascent but beyond dispute. Consequently, human rights law is adapting capabilities centred on “the people and the planet”- bringing human beings and our survival into urgent focus. Advancement in international legal dimensions integrating human rights principles into climate change policy statements shows that protecting the socio-economic rights of vulnerable people affected by climate change is gradually on top of the global agenda.
Human rights lens on climate sustainability shifts global conversations to focus on individuals and how climate change severely diminishes their quality of life. To protect “the people and the planet”, the government must take proactive steps to raise ambitions at all levels and develop a strategy that embraces international cooperation in addressing climate change as a human rights issue.
