Professorial Research Fellow in Modern War Studies
Lloyd Clark is Professorial Research Fellow in the Humanities Research Institute and Course Director of the University’s MA in Modern War Studies and Contemporary Military History programme based in London. He is also Director of Research at the Centre for Army Leadership (CAL) based at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Director of the CAL Research Institute, a member of the British Army’s Research Committee, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the British Commission for Military History. He is also a member of advisory boards for several think tanks, academic journals and international research led organisations.
Educated in the departments of history and war studies at King’s College, University of London, Professor Clark is a specialist in all aspects of command and leadership with particular interest in the Second World War and the contemporary operating environment. Professor Clark’s publications include: Anzio – The Friction of War – Italy and the Battle for Rome 1944 (UK: Headline, 2006; US: Grove Atlantic, 2006); Arnhem – Jumping the Rhine 1944-45 (UK: Headline, 2008; US: Grove Atlantic, 2008); Kursk – The Greatest Battle – Eastern Front 1943 (UK: Headline, 2011; US: Grove Atlantic, 2011); Blitzkrieg: Myth, Reality, and Hitler’s Lightning War: France 1940 (UK: Atlantic, 2016; US: Grove Atlantic, 2016) and The Commanders: The Leadership: The Leadership Journeys of George Patton, Bernard Montgomery and Erwin Rommel (UK: Atlantic, 2022; US: Grove Atlantic, 2022)
Professor Clark is currently working on a major new book about the value of impact of British and US military raiding. He supervises doctoral research on 20th and 21st century war studies, military history, command and leadership.
