Bridging the gap between medicine and psychology, our course focuses on understanding the behavioural processes around health, illness and disability, and is one of the only British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited MScs in this subject to offer an 18-week placement. Our MSc Health Psychology programme is designed to allow students to develop knowledge and skills across all of the main areas of health psychology to postgraduate level. We cover a wide-range of topics, from advanced research methods to a working and evidence-based knowledge of health psychology approaches, theories, models and interventions.
You will develop a strong knowledge base and core transferable skills. You will learn to analyse, debate, discuss and devise behaviour change interventions for use in primary, secondary and community care. You’ll become autonomous in the design and analysis of research, and develop skills towards becoming an independent researcher. You’ll develop an awareness of the practical reality of working in applied settings before going on to perfect those skills in our embedded placement. All of this will provide you with a solid foundation for further study and employment in a variety of areas, including psychology and research assistantships, PhDs, and further training in health or clinical psychology.

Here is what one of our 2019 graduates had to say:
Studying on the Health Psychology Masters course at Buckingham has allowed me to develop strong skills central to working in research and other areas of Health Psychology. I have strong verbal and written communication skills, having had the opportunity to deliver conference style-presentations and therapeutic techniques such as motivational interviewing. Furthermore, a testament to the high level of writing skills I have developed as a result of studying at Buckingham is that I have a publication under my belt at Masters level, having my Masters dissertation published in the Journal of Health Psychology in June 2019. These skills have prepared me well for my job as a Research Assistant for Public Health England’s Behavioural Science Team within the Emergency Response Department. I put to use my abilities to thoroughly review and analyse research literature, my quantitative and qualitative data analysis knowledge and my report writing skills- to name a few. Ultimately, studying at Buckingham has given me a strong foundation for me to be able to build what I hope will be a successful and meaningful career in Health Psychology.
