    Teaching and assessment

We keep class sizes small so you won’t get lost in the crowd. You will be assigned a personal tutor to support you every step of the way, and our academic and student support teams will ensure you have the tools to succeed in your studies. We value the quality of your learning experience.

    Teaching methods

Teaching on the MSc Cyber Security combines academic knowledge with practical application. Our methods ensure you’re given the tools to build the technical, analytical and professional skills needed to tackle complex and evolving cyber security challenges and prepare for advanced roles in the sector.

You will learn through a varied mix of lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, practical classes, group activities and independent study. Lectures and tutorials give you a strong foundation in advanced cyber security concepts, while seminars and workshops help you develop the critical thinking needed to assess contemporary threats, emerging technologies and different approaches to security.

Practical learning is central to the programme. You will apply your knowledge to realistic cyber security problems and develop hands-on skills in scripting, security analysis, penetration testing, digital forensics, risk assessment and security solution evaluation. This experience builds your confidence in applying technical knowledge to complex and unpredictable scenarios and helps you develop skills that are directly relevant to professional practice.

You will also benefit from guest lectures and insights from cyber security professionals, giving you opportunities to hear directly from practitioners, explore current industry challenges and gain insights into career pathways. Industry engagement will help you connect your studies with real-world practice, understand how organisations manage cyber risk and develop the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Collaborative activities strengthen your teamwork, communication and leadership skills, while helping you understand cyber security from technical, organisational and strategic perspectives. You will explore ethical and inclusive leadership, business strategy and digital transformation, preparing you to contribute effectively in professional environments and take on greater responsibility.

As you progress, you will develop increasing independence through individual practice, self-directed learning and research. You will learn to identify and investigate cyber security problems, critically evaluate evidence and make well-supported decisions, skills that are essential for postgraduate study and professional practice.

Your learning culminates in an individual cyber security research project, supported by academic supervision. This gives you the opportunity to apply your knowledge to a significant cyber security challenge, develop an appropriate solution and demonstrate the technical, research and problem-solving capabilities you have gained throughout the programme.

The programme is designed to prepare you not only as a technically capable cyber security specialist, but as a confident and adaptable professional who can solve complex problems, make informed decisions, communicate effectively, lead collaboratively and contribute to secure digital transformation.

    Assessment Methods

Assessment is designed to evaluate your knowledge, practical capability, critical thinking, research skills and professional communication.

You will experience a range of assessment methods, including written examinations, coursework, portfolios, research reports, project proposals, project posters, practical project work, project reports, viva examinations and presentations.

The practical assessments allow you to demonstrate your ability to apply cyber security knowledge to complex problems, while coursework and portfolios assess your ability to analyse security technologies, methodologies, attack vectors and defensive strategies.

Research reports and project proposals develop your ability to identify and investigate significant cyber security questions using appropriate research methods. Your final individual project brings these capabilities together through substantial practical and research-based work.

The viva and presentation provide opportunities to demonstrate your ability to explain, justify and defend technical decisions and findings to different audiences.

Together, these assessment methods develop the combination of technical expertise, critical analysis, independent research and communication skills expected of advanced cyber security professionals.
