Renovation of Students’ Union at Tanlaw Mill underway

25 October 2021

Our exciting new project to upgrade and renovate our Students’ Union at Tanlaw Mill is officially underway.

Tanlaw Mill proposed refectory

Work has begun to transform the look and feel of our Students’ Union, and further enhance the unique Buckingham student experience. We are developing the existing space to allow students to spend more time in the building through the day, and into the night too, with the aim of creating a truly student-owned space.

Kris Sheard, our SU President said: “We believe that student spaces are much more than purely their function. We have considered the ‘why’ we need student spaces and ‘what’ those spaces do. We want our student spaces to be constantly available in order to encourage positive social environments on campus and deliver on the academic ambitions of students as well.”

“The development of a ‘Student Hub’ allows students to curate their own experience whilst at Buckingham. Enhancing these spaces will enable our students to better connect and identify with their campus and their peers.”

There will be a new foyer and games room, and an agile working space available in the daytime, as well as space for enterprise and businesses too. By night, students can enjoy the speakeasy-themed bar – this area will always be open for use, even when the bar is closed.

There are even plans to develop the building further, with even more dedicated study spaces.
