“How can the Government make a success of its employment reforms?” by Nye Cominetti (Resolution Foundation)
The Government is undertaking major workplace reforms — repealing recently enacted restrictions on unions, and strengthening worker rights, including by giving zero-hour contract workers the right to a secure contract, and making protection against unfair dismissal a ‘day one’ right. The Government has also raised the minimum wage, especially for the youngest workers.
The reforms are yet to be finalised; much of the detail will only be filled in after the Employment Rights Bill has passed. In my talk I will look at the likely direction of the reforms, place the reforms in the context of previous UK policy and policy in other countries, and discuss the potential impact of the reforms on the wider economy.
