The newly-formed Buckingham Bullets cheerleading team competed in their first ever national competition – and walked off with the trophy.

The 13 girls won the Senior Level 1 over 16 category of the British Cheerleading Association North East Classics competition.

They beat off competition from 12 other teams in their section in spite of having their first rehearsal just five months ago.

Marketing and media communications first year student, Julia Onken, from California, said the team had been training at least twice a week for two hours at a time to perfect their routine.

She said: “At the beginning we were doing it for fun. As the competition got close I thought we had a real chance of winning.

“We became so close – sweating together and crying together. Most of the girls had never been to a cheerleading competition. Getting a trophy blew them away.

“It’s a fun way to be with a group of girls and make friends with people you wouldn’t otherwise know. Anyone can come and do a trial session.”

Their next competition is July 20 – the International Cheerleading Coalition in Blackpool – so keep your fingers crossed!
