MSc Computing (by Research) Scholarships

The University of Buckingham is the UK’s only independent University with a royal charter. It is committed to excellence in teaching and research, and to providing an outstanding service to its students. The School of Computing specialises in artificial intelligence/machine learning, computer vision, big data and data science as well as other subject areas in computing.

There are two scholarships available for those interested in specific research areas. Find out more below.

Deep Learning Decision Understanding and Visualisation

The School of Computing has established a research and development partnership with Ten-D Innovations in China. The five-year partnership investigates a range of problems in medical image analysis, particularly in computer aided recognition and detection of cancer from ultrasound images and develops effective solutions based on deep learning neural networks.

An opportunity of a full-time fully-funded scholarship for MSc in Computing by Research is now available over a period of up to 15 months. The research is concerned with understanding of decision making in deep learning neural networks and visualising decision paths across a deep learning neural network.

The ideal candidate for the position should meet the following requirements:

Essential:

  • BSc (preferably First Class Hons) in Computer Science or related subject area.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of machine learning in general and deep learning neural networks in particular.
  • Good knowledge of programming platforms and languages (e.g. Python, MATLAB)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills

Desired:

  • Good knowledge and experience of using machine learning and computer vision libraries.
  • Good mathematical skills.
  • Deliver high quality work adhering strict deadlines.
  • Good communication skills (e.g. minimum 6.5 in IELTS).

The closing date for applications is 4.30pm on Monday 13 January 2020. Further enquiry should be directed to Mr Hongbo Du, Co-ordinator for Ten-D Buckingham Research and Development Centre, at Hongbo.du@buckingham.ac.uk.

Autonomous Vehicle Systems

A scholarship of £7,650 is available towards the tuition fees of a MSc in Computing (by Research) over a period of 12 months.

This research aims investigate the use of machine learning solutions particularly in deep learning for vehicle activity analysis and path planning for autonomous driving. In this project the student will engage with a team of experts in the field of objects activity analysis and deep learning to investigate solutions for next-generation driver aid to avoid vehicle collisions on motorways.

The ideal candidate for the scholarship should meet the following requirements:

Essential:

  • BSc (preferably First Class Hons) in Computer Science or related subject area.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of machine learning in general and deep learning neural networks in particular.
  • Good knowledge of programming platforms and languages (e.g. Python, C++, MATLAB)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Fast prototyping skills

Desired:

  • Good knowledge and experience of using machine learning and computer vision libraries.
  • Good mathematical skills.
  • Deliver high quality work adhering strict deadlines.
  • Good communication skills (e.g. minimum 6.5 in IELTS).
