Want to start your studies in January? Here are questions we are frequently asked

Am I disadvantaged starting in January?

No, not at all. The course content will be the same as for our programmes starting in September, and if you apply for a two-year degree starting in January, you can graduate in December into a less crowded job market.

When can I apply? Are there any deadlines?

We accept applications for our January starts all year round via the direct application form on our website. Just head to the course you are interested in, and hit ‘Apply’. If you are a UK student applying for your first degree (an undergraduate course), you can also apply via UCAS.

You need to apply by 31 November to have your application processed in time to start your course in the following January. Application deadlines can vary by course, and we may be able to accept late applications. There is more information on how to apply here.

What courses offer a January start?

Most of our programmes are offered in January (as well as September). We are one of the few universities in the UK that offer a genuine second intake for our courses every year. You can search for courses here to discover which programmes accept January applications. To find out which courses are open, select your subject area (e.g. Business), and then select the programme you are interested in studying. When you are on the course page, click on the drop-down box at the top that asks you to ‘Select a start date’ and you can see the intakes available for that course.

How do I apply?

Your application process will depend on the course you’re interested in. If you know which course you want to apply for you can search for it here, and then click the ‘Apply’ button once you’re on the page. The apply page for each course contains information about entry requirements and what you need to start the application process.

To find out general information about applying for undergraduate (first degree) or postgraduate courses, visit our How to apply page.

How do I apply to study Medicine?

Our 4.5 year GMC-accredited MB ChB programme only offers a January start. You need to apply first and if you meet our entry criteria you may then be invited to attend a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) session to potentially secure a place on our Medicine course. Find out more on our Medicine page, including our upcoming MMI dates.

How will I be selected?

Every Buckingham course has its own specific set of entry requirements. To be selected you need to meet the entry requirements outlined on the course page as part of the application assessment.

I am an international student. Do January application dates apply to me?

Yes, you still need to apply by 31 November to be considered for a January course the following year. International students can apply directly or via an agent. To see our full list of approved agents around the world, please visit our agent page.

What will my timetable look like?

The timetable for our programmes is not finalised until applications have closed. However, once you are a student you will be able to access and manage your timetable by logging into the Buckingham Timetable system and selecting your classes.

What if my preferred programme is not offered in January?

Almost all of our courses offer a January start. However, if your preferred programme is not available then you can either choose to wait for a September start or consider an alternative programme which is as similar as possible to your first choice and does offer a January start. Our Admissions team can help to point you in the right direction.
