Top 10 for Student Satisfaction in England, The Complete University Guide 2023

Start university in January. Applications for undergraduate and postgraduate courses now open.

Same degree, different start date

If you haven’t studied, want to transfer course, or find a September start isn’t ideal, our January intake gives you the chance to commence your studies at a time that works for you.

We are one of the only universities in the UK where you can start university in January. We have wholly embraced a January intake, with almost all of our courses (including both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes) available to start in either September or January. That means no matter which entry point you choose, you will be part of a whole new student cohort and get to experience induction, Freshers’ Week and the same expert teaching and personal support facilities.

Choosing to start university in January with us on one of our two-year degrees will also give you the opportunity to graduate ahead of people studying a traditional three-year degree who started in the September before you. So competing for graduate-entry jobs will be that little bit easier!

You’ll study the same course content in the same timeframe as our September starters. If you apply now, we can guarantee your place on a course in January so you can relax knowing your study future is secure.

Why choose a January start?

You’re not ready to start university in September

Coronavirus has impacted exams this year, and you may want to take resits or spend some time with your family to consider your options. We appreciate it has been a challenging year and a September start may not work for everyone.

You can’t travel to the UK for a September start

Many international applicants are facing an uncertain future as travel restrictions continue to be in place around the world. It is hoped that by January the world will have largely returned to normal. That means you can apply for a January start now with more confidence that you will be able to travel to campus to commence your study adventure.

You chose the wrong course

Students often think that once they begin a course they are ‘stuck’, but this is not the case. If you don’t like your course or realise that it’s just not the right fit, January entry allows you to transfer to a different course (often with some credits granted). You can start a fresh course in January and, if you choose a two-year degree, you can still graduate six months ahead of students starting the previous September at a traditional university.

You are finding the ‘big’ university experience lonely

Nearly 10 per cent of our January starters transfer from another university, so you won’t be alone. As a smaller university, we are proud of our strong sense of community, personal tutor support and small class sizes. You won’t get lost in the crowd at Buckingham.

You missed out on a place

If you missed out on a place in September, the January intake can help you to gain entry into your first choice of course. Buckingham specifically allocates additional spots for the January intake, meaning that you have another chance to snap up a place on the course you really want.

You need flexible study options

If you are a mature student looking to study for the first time or getting ready to begin a second degree, starting in January can provide you with extra flexibility. Some of our school leavers also enjoy a mini gap year, relaxed in the knowledge that they have secured their place to study in January.
