Jon Arch gives lecture on drug discovery strategies at SMR meeting
25 September 2008
Jon Arch, Deputy Director of the Clore Laboratory, University of Buckingham, UK, delivered the opening lecture of the Society for Medicines Research (SMR) meeting on ‘Obesity and its treatment’ held in London on 25 September 2008.
In his lecture, entitled ‘Drug discovery strategies: small steps or giant leaps?’, Jon outlined the benefits and deficiencies of current drug treatments and how these drugs can be improved by reducing side effects or by using combinations of drugs to widen the therapeutic window. He then discussed new therapeutic approaches that are being developed to produce drugs with improved efficacy and safety, including lipid modulators, gut hormones and adipokines. Finally, he emphasised the need to increase energy expenditure as part of an anti-obesity drug strategy.
