Jon Arch lectures at Metabolic Diseases meeting
24 September 2008
Jon Arch, Deputy Director of the Clore Laboratory, University of Buckingham, UK, chaired and gave a presentation entitled ‘Satisfying the regulators’ demands for anti-obesity drugs – where current drugs don’t and how novel drugs might’ at an industry meeting organised by SMi and held in London, 24–25 September 2008.
Jon outlined the regulatory guidelines of the FDA and EMEA for efficacy and demonstrated that current marketed drugs barely meet these requirements. He then outlined approaches to increase efficacy and to reduce side effects. He particularly focused on the possibility of discovering agents that selectively reduce fat mass, particularly visceral fat, and agents that provide metabolic benefits beyond those expected from weight loss.
