Clore Laboratory acquires Aperio imaging system for determining pancreatic islet cell mass

The ability to determine pancreatic islet β-cell mass is a key parameter in the search for new drugs to successfully treat type 2 diabetes.

The Aperio whole slide scanning and image analysis system with staining for insulin and glucagon allows the calculation of both alpha and beta cell mass. These can be done on the same pancreatic section using colour deconvolution and the Aperio co-localisation analysis tool.

This system is available for both collaborative academic projects and as a service to commercial research sponsors. In both cases, it can be coupled with the in-house expertise of animal models of type 2 diabetes. The system can also be used for other tissue samples where quantitative analysis would provide significant added value such as diabetic nephropathy.
