Jon Arch lectures to diabetes specialists on anti-obesity drugs
22 January 2009
Jon Arch, Deputy Director of Metabolic Research at the Clore Laboratory, University of Buckingham, reviewed the pharmacological management of obesity in a lecture delivered at the 10th National Conference: The Diabetes Epidemic held in London on 22-23 January 2009.
Jon demonstrated that reducing body fat mass by 5% has a significant effect on diabetic control but currently marketed drugs had failed to consistently achieve this. The CB1 antagonist rimonabant had provided more hope and appeared to have weight independent effects on metabolic control but this agent failed to get approval in the US and was removed from the market in Europe as a result of potential side-effects.
