11 December 2017

StonehengeThe University of Buckingham’s Stonehenge research has been nominated for one of the country’s most prestigious archaeology awards.

Senior Research Archaeologist David Jacques‘ Blick Mead project is in the running for the top award for making an outstanding contribution to archaeology.

The nomination has been made by Current Archaeology, which every year celebrates the projects and people judged to have made outstanding contributions to archaeology.

The ‘Blick Mead Project’ has been nominated in the prestigious ‘Research Project of the Year 2018’ category.  The excavations at Blick Mead, about a mile from Stonehenge, have provided a paradigm shift in our understanding of the establishment of the Stonehenge landscape. The University of Buckingham team has also been critical of the plans for a tunnel at Stonehenge which will run past and damage Blick Mead.

David Jacques said: “We are thrilled that our groundbreaking research at Stonehenge has been recognised by Britain’s foremost archaeology publication and we hope that as many people as possible get a chance to read about our work and vote for the Project. We are unearthing the story behind why Stonehenge was built, which is vital work.”

The Current Archaeology awards are voted for entirely by the public – there are no panels of judges – and the awards ceremony will be held at Senate House on 23 February 2018. David Jacques, the project director, says ” We are thrilled that our groundbreaking research at Stonehenge has been recognised by Britain’s foremost archaeology publication and we hope that as many people as possible get a chance to read about our work and vote for the Project by following this link  www.archaeology.co.uk/vote.
