UBSOS – University of Buckingham Supporting Overseas Schooling
After the devastating tsunami of 2004 students and staff members at the University set up a fund to help those in need. Many of our current students and alumni originate from the affected countries and that is how UBSOS was born. Our main focus has been to help educate children in deprived countries and to encourage education as a means for a better life.
UBSOS organises fund-raising events such as pamper days, book and tabletop sales, and raffles. We have also raised money through car washes, concerts and lectures held at the University, and through the creation of the UBSOS Cookbook – a collection of recipes donated by staff, students and friends.
With the continuous support of friends, and the student and staff body at the University, we have been able to provide study material and medical supplies in Sri Lanka, and financial help and school furniture in Kenya. We have also participated in other local projects in both countries with the help of some of our members who travelled to those destinations.
UBSOS began 2008 in Mexico, where we are working with other committed individuals to help towards the establishment of a vocational centre for disadvantaged young people. This centre will provide psychological, vocational and skills training to those who cannot afford to return to education with a special focus on street children. In Argentina we are taking part in a project to help small indigenous communities in rural areas of the Chaco province. Financial help and support has been agreed for young members of the Toba community who have educational needs.
We are extremely grateful to those who have helped us so far. There is however still a lot more to be done. Having access to education is a way of achieving a better life. Do contact us at email@example.com and join our team.
Download the latest UBSOS newsletter for more details of our recent projects (PDF file, 2668 KB). If you would like to make a donation, please make cheques payable to “The University of Buckingham” and write “UBSOS” on the back. Cheques should be sent to the Alumni Office, The University of Buckingham, Yeomanry House, Hunter Street, Buckingham, MK18 1EG.
Home-made cake sale and other fund-raising
There was another cake sale in the Franciscan Library in aid of UBSOS in May 2011. The idea of the sale was not only to raise much needed funds but also to raise awareness of UBSOS particularly amongst new students. Thanks to everyone’s generosity £50 was raised. Thanks go to Christine, Irene, Liz and Sue for making the cakes and of course to all our customers!
Some of the students have raised £1,000 towards the Japanese tsunami victims by arranging a party, and UBSOS will be raising further money for the same cause over the next few weeks.
UBSOS has also sent money for orphans in Burma via a current student to provide equipment to take part in a large sports event that they would otherwise never have the chance to do. We are also looking to help children in Kibera, Kenya.
