External Readers

Anyone who is not a current member of the University can apply to become an external reader. An external reader may read books and journals within the library and make use of the photocopiers, but may not use IT facilities or borrow books.

Books may be borrowed if an annual membership fee is paid. There are two categories of external borrower:
1. Borrowers with a University connection: £40 annual membership fee
2. All other external borrowers: £60 annual membership fee.

Loan entitlement:
Up to 5 general loan books on a 4-week loan basis, with fines for overdue books charged at the same rate as for students.

How to apply

Application forms are available from the service desk of each of the two site libraries. Further details are available from the University of Buckingham Library, Hunter Street, University of Buckingham, MK18 1EG. Tel: +44 (0)1280 820218. Please bring proof of your name and address when applying.

SCONUL scheme

Under the SCONUL scheme, students from other universities are eligible to use the Library during their vacation periods for reference purposes. Any such student who needed to use the Library for an extended period could apply to become an external reader.

SCONUL Access
External SCONUL Access users must first register with our library in office hours (09:00 to 17:00 weekdays) before they are allowed to borrow books. They will then be entered onto our library system and be issued with a uCard.

Loans to SCONUL Access users will only be made against a valid SCONUL Access card / an email confirming SCONUL Access eligibility and a home institution ID card and proof of address.

IT facilities and electronic library services are not included with SCONUL Access.
