Ab Initio (AI) Course for New Teachers

23 August 2017 09:00 - 17:00

Event Navigation

The AI course is a one-day training course in late August for teachers who start their teaching careers in September. The course is best described as ‘pre-season training’ and is highly recommended for our PGCE students who have not taught before, as well as any new teachers in the independent or state sector.

The course inducts teachers into the profession and provides a toolkit for their first six weeks in post. A teacher’s first half-term with sole responsibility for classes and their pupils’ progress is daunting and demanding, and this course enables teachers to effectively prepare with confidence for the challenges and workload ahead.

The course is highly practical and the topics include:

  • Effective class & behaviour management
  • Lesson planning & evaluation
  • Marking & assessment
  • Differentiation
  • Report writing & parents’ evenings
  • The role of the Form Tutor
  • Safeguarding & child protection
  • Managing the workload

The fee for the Ab Initio course is £395 for UK and International trainees covering the cost of all tutoring and food whilst trainees are attending the course.

To attend the course, PGCE applicants need only tick the relevant box on the PGCE application form, which is available to download from the University of Buckingham’s website (www.buckingham.ac.uk/education). Please complete and return the application to the School of Education.
