Senior Strategy Manager with the Welsh Government
Phil Catherwood is a Senior Strategy Manager with the Welsh Government, developing economic strategies for the manufacturing sector. This has included spending time with Toyota Deeside’s Lean Management Centre (2013).
Preceding roles have included Senior Innovation Manager and Business Development Manager, developing and managing business support interventions including the Six Sigma Wales programme, industry best practice visits and leadership events.
Prior to joining the public sector, Phil worked in manufacturing for 20 years with Tata Steel, ASW and Sony. During this time, he held a number of roles including delivering Six Sigma Black Belt projects, designing Six Sigma programmes and implementing TPM programmes. Further manufacturing performance improvements have been delivered through lean projects, Theory of Constraints and industrial engineering.
Phil also led a major benchmarking project in the steel industry, spending 3 months in Japan studying best practice.
To complement deploying improvement initiates, Phil has also held senior positions in manufacturing management.
Phil’s education includes a degree in Engineering Production from UWIST and an MBA from Cardiff Business School. He is a Chartered Engineer (Institute of Engineering & Technology), has a Diploma in Marketing, is a Six Sigma Black Belt (Sony San Diego), a Prince II Practitioner and trained in Kepner Tregoe principles.
He is the co-author of Six Sigma and The Quality Toolbox.
