Coase Scholarships
A generous endowment from Professor Ronald Coase enables us to offer two full fee scholarships per year in the areas of Law, Economics and Business.
A Coase Scholarship will normally cover full UK undergraduate tuition fees for two years, plus accommodation and living expenses. Any change in fees for the second year of study will be reflected in the ScholarshipCandidates are asked to write a short essay of not more than 2,000 words on:
"Why does Britain need a Broadcasting Corporation financed by a compulsory television licence fee?"
Coase Scholars will follow one of the following 2-year degree programmes:
- Economics
- Law with Economics
- Economics with Law
- Business Economics
- Economics, Business and Law
- Politics, Economics and Law
Candidates should be UK citizens and should have or expect to achieve at least 300 A-level points.
The essay should be accompanied by a reference from a person of standing and should be sent to:

The closing date for applications for Coase Scholarships is 1 May 2010. All shortlisted candidates will be called for interview. Coase Scholars should begin their undergraduate degree programme in September 2010.
Professor Coase, one of the most influential economic thinkers of the last century, is an Honorary Professor of the University and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economic Science in 1991. His lecture at the University on the occasion of the award of his honorary degree and the speech outlining his life and achievements are posted on the University's website (see link below).
