Quick guides to Internet databases and e-journals

- Click on PsycInfo, Academic Search Elite, Business Source Premier or EJS.
- A screen message will appear: “Your session has expired. To begin a new session, please click here”. Follow the instruction.
- A list of databases will appear: PsycInfo, Academic Search Elite, Business Source Premier or EJS.
- Select one (or more) by ticking the box to the left of the database title. Click on the “Continue” button.
- The screen defaults to Advanced search. Other options on the menu bar are Basic search, Visual search, Choose databases.
- Note on the list of databases, below each one, the links: Title list and More Information.
- Click on Title list to see what publications are available. Use the Find or Browse options.
- Click on More Information for tutorials, search tips, etc.
- No authorisation is required from campus computers.
- There are three ways to search the database: the menu search, keyword search or browse reports facility.
- Menu search: Select data from the geography AND category. Types of data include Statistics, Analysis / market reports, Companies and market share, Sources. Limit your search by de-selecting data types and click on Filter. Under category, a ‘Find category’ box allows you to enter keywords to refine your search.
- Keyword search: The search box is accessed via the menu bar. Use Boolean operators AND, OR and AND NOT. Limit your search by de-selecting information types.
- Browse reports: market reports can be accessed via the menu bar.
HeinOnline
HeinOnline provides access to the Law Journal Library containing 1,200 international legal journals and the English Reports Full Reprint (1220-1865), the only legal database at Buckingham to comprehensively cover these older Reports. Select which of these two resources you wish to search, either journal articles or older English case law.
Try it:
Go to HeinOnline and click on Law Journal Library and look at the alphabetical list of journals, select American Bankruptcy Institute Law Review to see the coverage of this journal. Click on Search tab / AdvancedSearch and enter under Enron in the search for box and select the relevant journal abbreviation Am. Bankr. Inst. L.Rev to find various articles. See screen shot below for this search, which can be limited by date range.
- Select Main Search Page (at the top of the screen)
- Enter user name and password, if accessing database from outside campus
- Select either Quick search, Simple search, Standard search or Advanced search.
IngentaConnect
- Search – enter search term/s and select Electronic content, Fax/Ariel content or Journal or book title. Click on Go.
- Browse Publications – by journal title, subject category or publisher.
- Advanced Search – enter search terms in one or more fields and click on the Search button.
- Where there is a letter S in an orange square next to the article, you have access to the full text article.
- No authorisation is required from campus computers.
- Access from off campus computers is via Athens username and password.
Kompass
- Click on “Advanced search”.
- Please note that the region “United Kingdom” has already been selected.
- Enter a search term(s) in at least one of the following categories: contact information, products and services, company activity, fulltext, location, financial performance, company details, company flags or executive information.
- Click on “Start search”.
- Results of your search can be printed or downloaded.
LexisLibrary
- Click on the Start button, then click on Law, and then on LexisLibrary.
- Non-University computer access (off-campus or WIA) is by Athens user name and password (please apply to Library).
- Full instructions for using LexisLibrary are available: lexisnexis (1773 KB); you can also use the “View Tutorials” section on the LexisLibrary website.
Nexis®
- The default or start page is the ”News” search form.
- Enter a search term.
- Select a document section, e.g. ”Anywhere” or “in the headline”, “at the start”, etc.
- Select a connector, if you have more than one search term, e.g. “And”
- Enter another search term if required.
- If you wish to add an index term to narrow your search, tick the box next to the term. You can select up to 10.
- Select a source from the Select sources drop down list – the default is All English language news.
- Select a date – click on the down arrow for options.
- Click on either one of the two red “search” buttons to run the search.
- When you search in a combined source, use “Result groups” to display the results from a specific source.
- The “Result groups” feature (top left of results page) is particularly useful if your search retrieves a large number of articles.
- Select “Source type”, ”Source name”, etc. The number of documents in each source appears on the right. Click on a source to retrieve articles from that source.
- While viewing a full text article, use “Index terms” to quickly find within the current results other articles containing similar topics – tick the topics listed under ”Find documents with similar topics” at the end of the article. Then click ”Narrow search with index terms”
- There are many ways to find information from this database.
- Use the ”Companies” search form to retrieve corporate information and financial reports of a company.
- You can also use “General Search”, which can be either an “Easy search” or “Power search” to search across the content.
- Use ”Help” (top right of screen) and ”View Tutorials” (right margin) to learn more about searching the database.
Oxford DNB
This database contains 50,000 biographies of people who have contributed to the history of the British Isles from the earliest times to the present.
- The ‘Quick search now’ page is the home page of the Oxford DNB.
- Enter the name you wish to search (natural order, surname or aristocratic title) and click on Go.
- Or search for words in the text of the articles and click on Go.
- You can also search the database by clicking on the tabs: Search, Browse or Themes.
PsycINFO has more than 2.3 million abstracts from 1887 to today, including more than 2,100 journals, and books, reports, dissertations etc.
PsycINFO is provided through the EBSCO host. Full text articles from 60 journals are available from PsycARTICLES.
- Go to Library / Electronic information / Databases (or directly from Start)
- Under Sciences select PsycINFO, select PsycINFO by itself within the EBSCO host
- In PsycINFO do a search on “sleep disorders” as a subject and dreams in the abstract field – open up abstracts which interest you, look at Cited References
- To do a broader database search go back to include PsycArticles, Academic Search Elite database (which includes some full text documents) and EJS E-Journals database with PsycINFO
- Try a title search on Hypnosis and memory
- Refine this search to find the full text articles only and email a complete article to yourself. Results are in date order.
- Do a new search in all text to find only full text articles on the Stroop test.
- Go to Choose Databases and look at the journal title list in Academic Search Elite and browse for British Journal of Psychology and note down from what date full text starts and confirm that we hold this title in the Library.
- Search the Library catalogue eLibrary for this journal to see the start date.
Westlaw
Westlaw covers UK cases back to 1865, fully consolidated legislation back to 1267, statutory instruments from 1948, full text journals, EU cases and legislation from 1952, plus material from the US and other countries. Red no entry sign alerts notifying you if a judgment has been overruled/overturned or reversed.
- Access via Start / Law / Westlaw UK
- Click in cases and enter in citation eg 1999 ILPR 442
- Click on citation for full text of case and email it to yourself
- Search by Party name e.g. Pepper v Hart
- Go to case analysis and find journal articles
- Searches can also be made by subject matter in free text box
- Search by legislation title eg Companies Act 2006 and in provision select section 310
- Go to journals, enter “clinical negligence” and search within results by adding manslaughter for full text articles and index
- Click on Current Awareness for European Union in subject (also see EU tab)
- Go to Westlaw International for the Directory – look at US cases – All Federal Cases
- Scope (i) will gives details of Westlaw coverage in Directory
- Recommend taking the training tutorial of Westlaw
- Click Home to do combined search on “Westmoreland investment” in journals and cases (look for red no entry sign)
- External access via Athens – please apply to the Library desk
- Always use the Log out button to leave Westlaw
