Further details: Philip Fine is Senior Lecturer in Psychology. Though his doctorate investigated hemispheric asymmetry and face processing, his main area of interest and expertise is now the psychology of music, particularly the cognitive processes involved in sight-singing and sight-reading novel music. Projects in progress include investigating the perception of sung text, the eye-voice span in singers, and the effects of background music on cognitive abilities (the so-called "Mozart effect"). A set of studies investigating crossword solving strategies is also in the planning stage, as is research into the relationship between gender and playing musical instruments. Other areas of interest include various aspects of cognition (memory, problem solving and language) and perception (visual and auditory), and of cognitive neuropsychology, such as face processing and hemispheric asymmetry.
