The move of Professor Alan Smithers, his colleague Dr Pamela Robinson and his research team, the Centre for Education and Employment Research (CEER), from Liverpool University caused quite a stir this month. Articles about it included:

  • 'Academic to privatise his team' - TES , 25th June

  • 'Set free to do the job' - The Times Higher , 25th June
  • 'Academic farewell tinged with sadness' - Liverpool Daily Post , 21st June
  • 'Red tape drives Smithers private' - The Times Higher , 25th June

"Boisterous boys are too much like hard work, so we drug them into conformity" - this article by Dr Terence Kealey was published in The Times on 4th June.

'Beware! It's the attack of the medieval bigots' - in this article in the 'Thunderer' section of The Times on 17th June, Dr Terence Kealey discusses human cloning.

'Classrooms are the best place for teachers' - this article in the Daily Telegraph on 23rd June caused a stir amongst independent school teachers prompting numerous telephone calls to the University for further information on the PGCE course . The article appraised the first year of the PGCE course, which has been a great success.

Following a visit from Lucy Hodges of The Independent (prompted by the move of Professor Smithers to Buckingham), a lengthy profile of the University, accompanied by a friendly editorial, appeared in the newspaper on 24th June.

In a further article in The Independent on the same day entitled 'Going private', the University is seen as encouraging other universities to "think big" in levering more funds from private sources.

'Too much too young?' - Edi Smockum reports on the classes and crazes that encourage our babies to do more and more at ever earlier ages, in the Weekend FT on 26th June.

The sad loss of Dame Barbara Shenfield, co-founder of the University, was reported in the obituary section of The Independent on 26th June.

'Prince attacks education policies' - in an article concerning HRH Prince Charles and the Government's education policies, Professor Chris Woodhead was favourably described as "now the visiting professor at the University of Buckingham". This article appeared in The Guardian on 26th June.

'Charles goes to war against the trendy teachers' - in this article appearing in the Daily Mail on 26th June, Professor Chris Woodhead is described as a close adviser to HRH the Prince of Wales on education.

'Buck up' - Dr Kealey's letter concerning the University's political links was published in The Guardian on 29th June.

'Beware personal learning' - Professor Chris Woodhead discusses proposals for mix-and-match secondary school courses in his article, which was published in the Daily Telegraph on 30th June.

The University was mentioned on two separate occasions in the 'Notebook' section of The Guardian this month, in connection with Professor Alan Smithers' "defection" to the University and Professor Chris Woodhead's opinion concerning the Tomlinson Report, expressed at the plenary session of HRH the Prince of Wales' third annual Education Summer School.

Radio and other appearances

Professor Alan Smithers was interviewed on 21st June on the Roger Phillips Show on BBC Radio Merseyside about the move from Liverpool to Buckingham.

  • was interviewed for On the Ropes on 2nd June (the programme was broadcast on Radio 4 later in the month)
  • spoke on BBC Radio 4 on 3rd June
  • was interviewed for You and Yours (Radio 4) on 7th June
  • talked to the Oxford Union about the future of Oxford University on 15th June
  • spoke at a Politeia conference on 16th June on the Tomlinson Report (a pamphlet was subsequently published)
  • gave a talk at Shrewsbury School to prep school heads on 17th June
  • took part in an "Any Questions" session at the Prince of Wales' Education Summer School in Buxton on 25th June.
