Politics (combined honours)

Home   >>   Humanities   >>   Politics (combined honours)

The study of Politics at Buckingham is vibrant at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At undergraduate level the focus is on political and social theory, international relations, and the politics of particular regions around the world. Follow the links (right) for the BA honours degrees that include the in-depth study of politics and the MA in Global Affairs.

At undergraduate level the study of Politics consists of 120 units over eight terms. Political theory is covered in courses such as Contemporary Political Theory and Social Theory and Social Welfare. The field of International Relations is reflected in a first-year course on the European Union and a second-year course in international relations theory. Half the units on the minor are given to the study of the politics of particular regions. The political systems of the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries in Europe make up the first-year courses, while the Politics of Latin America and International Organisations are studied in the second year.

The postgraduate MA in Global Affairs is the only professional training programme of its kind in the United Kingdom. Following its introduction in September 2006, the programme has entry points in April and September each year. There are four core areas of study: international law, global economics and finance, global governance, and the evolution of the global system. The programme also includes specific courses covering conflict and security issues, international environmental politics and international negotiating. More ...

As with the rest of Humanities, Politics maintains small-group teaching, disappearing at other universities, allowing a real immersion in the subject, and thoughtfulness and care in the teaching. There is a dedicated reading room in the Hunter Street Humanities Library, with particularly good holdings, since Politics has been studied at Buckingham since the University's foundation.
