RECORDS OF BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

The cover of Records of Buckinghamshire with a portrait of William Lowndes

Monday 8 June 2009

Records of Buckinghamshire 49 (2009).

Records of Buckinghamshire is the journal of the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society, and publishes articles on the county's history and archaeology. The Society was founded in 1854 and the first volume of its Records appeared five years later. The Society is thus one of the oldest of its kind in Britain. The editor of Records is Professor John Clarke, Professor of History at the University and co-author of the recent book on Castle House Buckingham which is reviewed in the latest volume of Records.

The 2009 volume contains a number of archaeological reports, mainly on sites in Milton Keynes. There are also articles on Chesham's 14th-century manor court rolls, the Buckinghamshire poll tax records of 1377 and 1379, and the activities in the property market of William Lowndes, the builder of Winslow Hall (whose portrait is shown on the cover). There is an obituary of Edward Legg (1937-2008), who bequeathed his extensive collection of books on local history to the University.

A full list of articles is given below (the volume also contains notes, reports and book reviews):
