COASE SCHOLARSHIPS

Monday 5 March 2007

Professor Ronald Coase, the distinguished economist and Nobel Laureate, has generously endowed two full fee scholarships for undergraduate study in Economics at Buckingham. These scholarships are available annually to UK citizens for the whole of their degree programme.

Professor Coase's work relates the study of economics and of economic institutions to the broader social environment. As Britain's only independent university, Buckingham regards itself as standing in the tradition he has helped, and is still helping, to create and maintain. In an increasingly conformist educational system, Buckingham aims to promote a tradition of intellectual independence.

The Department of Economics and International Studies attempts not only to give undergraduates an understanding of economic and business principles but to place this understanding within the context of the wider historical and political situation. It focuses on subjects that have been central to the life work of Professor Coase, such as Regulation and Privatisation and Legal Economics.

Each year applicants for Coase Scholarships will be asked to write a short essay on a subject that is relevant to the applicant's personal experience of social and economic life. We hope that the subjects will be in what might be called the Coasian tradition, with the 2007 essay title being: "Has your education so far been good value for money?". We welcome applicants who believe they will flourish in an academic atmosphere that is intimate, rigorous, and where there is genuine concern about the intellectual and social development of the whole university community.
