CURTAIN GOES UP ON BUCKINGHAM'S NEW CINEMA

Hugh and Jill Carey with the Committee

Tuesday 29th November 2005

After two years of hard work and planning, The Film Place - Buckingham's new cinema - finally opened its doors to the public last weekend (26th - 27th November).

The cinema officially launched with a film festival - a selection of four films as a taster for the variety the cinema will offer. A Bucks Fizz drinks reception was held on Saturday evening prior to the showing of James Dean classic, Rebel Without a Cause . Guests arrived in style to walk down a red carpet whilst paparazzi-style photographers recorded the event.

The support for this venture has never more obvious than at the launch - there was tremendous enthusiasm and words of encouragement from those I spoke to. Many reminisced about the previous cinema in Buckingham, which closed its doors in 1987, and also emphasised the immense welcome and support for this community-based local initiative.

Vice Chancellor, Dr Terence Kealey, said of the launch, "It was lovely seeing so many young people from the town as well as the University milling about the Chandos Road over the weekend - I think we've launched something good here."

David McGahey, Chairman of the BCA , said, "The Film Place has created an invaluable link between the University and the town, and now the cinema is here, we need people to support it to ensure it is able to offer entertainment to Buckingham and the surrounding area indefinitely."

Details of forthcoming showings, ticket outlets, directions and much more can be found at www.thefilmplace.org.uk (external link) .
