THE VICE-CHANCELLOR LOOKS BACK ON 2003 |

"2003 was a wonderful year for the University. We had our Quality Assurance Agency inspection and though we have yet to receive the full report from the QAA they were kind enough to write to say that the report would confirm their "broad confidence" (ie top marks).
Moreover we have continued to recruit high
quality staff, including - into our new department of education -
Professor Anthony O'Hear (who is also Director of the Royal
Institute of Philosophy and editor of the journal
Philosophy
), Professor Chris Woodhead (ex-head of Ofsted)
and Professor Dennis O'Keeffe (the truancy expert) and - into the
Business School - Dr Phil Dover from Babson College, Massachusetts,
as our new Dean.
On the national picture it is exciting that the Government is now proposing for the state universities a system of top-up fees and 2-year intensive degrees. These are copies of the Buckingham model and they vindicate our history. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a pair of kingfishers has taken up residence on the river bank opposite the students' union - how many other universities in the world are as beautiful as ours? So we end 2003 on a high note and I wish all students, prospective students, alumni and members of staff a happy and prosperous New Year. |

I send especially warm greetings to our
very kind donors (whose names will be published shortly). Our
donations equal 10% of our fee income, which I understand is the
highest of all European universities."
