LEADING ACADEMIC LECTURES AT BUCKINGHAM

Thursday 6th November 2003

On Tuesday 4th November, the Department of Accounting and Finance was delighted to welcome Professor Geoffrey Whittington to talk to staff and students about ‘The IASB: Role, Authority and Strategy’.

Professor Whittington is one of the leading accounting academics in the UK and has held professorships at the Universities of Edinburgh, Bristol and Cambridge as well as a number of prestigious posts, which include membership of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission and membership of the UK Accounting Standards Board. He is now an Emeritus Professor of the University of Cambridge and a member of the International Accounting Standards Board, which he joined on the formation of that body in April 2001. He is one of the members of the IASB who has specific responsibility for liaison with national standard setters, in his case with the UK ASB.

The IASB now enjoys a very high profile, partly as a result of recent accounting scandals in the USA but also due to the passing of an EU Regulation in 2002, which requires all publicly traded companies in the EU to prepare their consolidated financial statements in accordance with international, rather than national, accounting standards from the year 2005. Geoff Whittington was the ideal person to talk to us about the role, authority and strategy of the IASB and his lecture was well attended and enjoyed by a large number of students and staff.
