It was with great sadness that the University learnt of the
death of Sir Denis Thatcher. Sir Denis passed away on the morning
of Thursday 26th June.
Sir Denis was awarded an Honorary Degree by the University in 2000,
the only Honorary Degree he ever accepted, of which we are very
proud. The presentation, given by Professor John Clarke, talked of
Sir Denis as a true 'English gentleman' - a comment which was
picked up by much of the UK media.
Staff, students and alumni send their deepest sympathy to Lady
Thatcher, whose strongest supporter and companion throughout their
life together was Sir Denis. He was always by her side during her
visits to Buckingham and was a much loved character here in his own
right.
