VISIT FROM HONOURABLE JUDGE KITA ODIETE-GEORGEMANN

It was a great honour for the University of Buckingham to welcome the Honourable Justice K.O. Odiete-Georgemann (Mrs) from Nigeria on Friday 29th August. Justice Odiete-Georgemann was amongst the first intake of law students at the University, graduating in 1979.

After completing an LLM at Queen Mary College, London, she returned home to study for the Nigerian Bar and was appointed to the Nigerian High Court in 1995 as one of its first female judges.

After revisiting her old haunts at the Hunter Street Campus, Justice Odiete-Georgemann was entertained to lunch by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Terence Kealey, together with Mrs Charlotte Walsh (Dean of the Law School), Professor Andrew Durand, Alistair Alcock, George Jones (President of the Law Society), Olumide Ogunkelu (Vice-President of the Law Society) and Yemisi Fajimolu (President of the Nigerian Society).

Professor Durand was particularly pleased to welcome her back as he had been one of her lecturers during her time as an undergraduate and remembered her well.

In the afternoon she was accompanied on a tour of the Law School at Verney Park by students representing the Law Society and the Nigerian Society before meeting with a group of Nigerian law students and being kind enough to answer their many questions.

During tea with Mrs Charlotte Walsh, Justice Odiete-Georgemann expressed a strong desire to become involved with the Alumni Association in Nigeria on her return home. Apparently she had wanted to visit Buckingham for some time but her busy life had prevented her doing so. Her interest in revisiting the University was rekindled when a Buckingham alumnus visited her chambers and gave her a copy of The Independent .
