IMPORTANT LINK ESTABLISHED WITH DALIEN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

Members of staff greet representatives from Dalien University of Technology

Monday 10th November 2003

The University was recently host to representatives from Dalien University of Technology. Ronnie Lessem gives this report on the importance of our links with DUT:

Dalien University of Technology (DUT), based in North East China, has played a role in the miracle that China has become today. Dalien is a sea port that has been transformed into an industrial metropolis in the space of a mere ten years. In October, Ronnie Lessem, Director of our Trans-Cultural Research Centre and Transformation programmes, together with our Link Manager in China, Junie Tong, paid a visit to DUT and met Dean Wu and Madame Zhong, from the Management School.

Buckingham and Dalien are setting out to promote the reciprocal development of two worlds, Chinese and Anglo-Saxon, via their two academic institutions. Through our Trans-Cultural Research Centre and their Schools of Technology and Management, we aim to host students from DUT, on both our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, most specifically International Studies and Information Systems (undergraduate) and the Master's in Social and Economic Transformation (postgraduate). At the same time, we, at Buckingham, will be deepening our understanding of China's economy and culture with the help of Dalien, and our new association with the University of Jilin, via our trans-culturally, economic and socio-politically oriented research. For as Confucius said in the Great Appendix to the Yi King:

"It is the sages that prepare things for practical use, and invent instruments for the benefit of the world".

Such sages, together, we hope to be.
