The University was delighted to act as host to a SSAFA (Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association) lecture given by Kate Adie, the BBC's chief war correspondent.

The very informative and witty talk was about the role of women in the military but also included some anecdotes of Ms Adie's own experiences as a journalist. The event was a sell-out and an audio / visual link was set up so that some people who missed tickets in the main hall had the opportunity of seeing and hearing the talk in a separate lecture hall. Ms Adie went in to say hello to those in the link-up lecture room, so that they "would know I am a real person"!

"The talk was very informative and witty."

Speaking to a local reporter about her new book, Corsets to Camouflage: Women and War , before her talk Ms Adie said: "I wouldn't call it a history of women in the military. It is more a century of women's growing role in the military. If anything is male and macho it is the military".
