Course leader: John Halladay
Two terms (30 units)

The Law of Contract is a core course on any law degree. Contract is an aspect of law that affects our day-to-day lives. It is hard to go through a day without entering into a contract. At the same time, contract law must explain and regulate complex transactions involving huge sums of money.

Contract law is also the major pro-active tool of the practising lawyer. It is the mechanism by which the lawyer can help the client plan and prepare for the future.

On completion of the course, the student should understand the key elements and general principles of contract law required by the professional bodies for a qualifying law degree.

The course contains the following topic areas:

  • Overview
  • Introduction to the law of restitution
  • Elements of contract formation
  • Nature and effect of contractual terms
  • Remedies for breach of term
  • Misrepresentation
  • Duress and undue influence
  • Illegal contracts
  • Discharge from contractual obligations
  • Privity of contract
The course is assessed by a final (100%) examination.
